Phoenix 2011

Sary-Jo’s mom, Sary, recently had a birthday.  Her four kids, and their families, planned a surprise party for her in Phoenix.  Preparations took place over several months, with invitations going out to anyone we could locate (sorry if we missed you) without tipping the surprise.  Guests arrived from several states and Puerto Rico.  We gathered at the Westin Kierland Resort in Scottsdale and enjoyed time visiting and playing in the pool.  Sary was floored as people arrived over the course of a couple days – and she still had no idea about the party.  The party itself was held at a fascinating place called the Boulder House, which is a large house built right into the existing boulders in the desert just on the edge of Scottsdale.  Dinner was amazing, thanks to Kerry’s brother the chef.  The best part was all the friends and family that came in to make this special for Sary.

Hawaii with Jankel & Family

We were pleased to be able to return to Hawaii – this time joined by Jankel, Venita, Tyler and Tanner.  The cousins were excited to meet each other and quickly bonded.  All eight, but especially the four boys, basically lived in the water and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.  Randy and Jankel were able to get in a couple rounds of golf while the moms pulled kid duty.  Cousins

Daniel and David demonstrated tremendous growth as they were able to see good family behavior modeled day in and day out.  By the end, we think our boys showed more progress than they had in the previous several months.  Their understanding of cultural and family norms leaped forward in ways we could not have expected.  What a blessing!

Also, the parents enjoyed themselves.  We don’t get together often enough, but when we do it seems as if we had never been separated.

In the evenings, we held a Mexican Train tournament with the kids edging out the parents for bragging rights.  We will get them next time!!!

Cannon Beach & Sunriver, Oregon

Haystack Rock

Haystack Rock

Our good friends Gordon and Patty invited us to Cannon Beach, Oregon for Friday, the last day of their week-long conference.  On top of that, Gordon picked us up in their plane and personally flew us down!!!  What a treat!  There were several other friends attending the conference so we enjoyed great fellowship.  We also heard a wonderful talk from an Old Testament scholar, ate well (we always seem to eat well), played games, spent some time on the beach, etc., etc., etc.  God willing, we intend to make Cannon Beach a new tradition to start with the boys.

On Saturday, we got back in the plane (Cessna Skylane 182 Turbo) and flew to Sunriver, Oregon for the weekend.  We stayed at their condo in the beautiful resort.  Highlights included lots of bicycle riding, swimming, sunning, playing cards, and generally enjoying spending special time with Gordon & Patty.  On Sunday, when we had experienced all the sun we could fit in, Gordon flew us home to Puyallup.  On all flights, we got great views of the Cascade Mountains.  Sary-Jo, though a bit queasy, did quite well traveling in the small plane and Gordon provided us with excellent flights.

Thank you, Gordon and Patty, for your amazing hospitality and generosity.  We had such a memorable weekend!

Trip to California – Memorial Day Weekend 2009

With Ryans family at the Berkeley Rose Garden

With Ryan's family at the Berkeley Rose Garden

Ryan graduated from the University of California at Berkeley on Saturday with a degree in Industrial Engineering.  On Friday Ryan got very encouraging news on the job front and should hear soon whether or not he has landed a position in software technical support.  We flew down Saturday morning and finally had a chance to meet some of the people that have been very important in Janel’s life the last few years.

We stayed with Janel’s host family, John and Kay, who were extremely gracious.  Their home is beautiful and they seem to enjoy taking care of people.  We had a delightful time getting to know them and we enjoyed playing games and talking late into the night.  We can see why Janel says they’re very much like us (and we take that as a compliment).

We had a very enjoyable time with Ryan’s parents, Paul and Kathy, and with his sister Leslea and her husband Nick.  We all have quite a bit in common and we certainly feel like we’ve known them a lot longer than two days.

After church (Janel played drums with the worship band), we spent all of Sunday with Ryan’s family, eating, shopping, exploring the Berkeley Rose Garden, and visiting – all in all, a very enjoyable day.  Nick and Randy were continually getting game updates as Randy’s Mariners eventually prevailed over Nick’s Giants!  Janel was working so we stopped in her shop along the way.  That evening, Kay prepared a great meal for us and we continued to get to know each other.

On Monday, Janel and Ryan treated us to a Giants’ game.  The weather was great and so was the game.  AT&T Park overlooks the bay and is beautiful.  And the timing of the game was great as we went straight to the airport to catch our flight home after the last out.

And the best part, of course, was seeing Janelly again!!!  Thanks, Janel, for making it a very special weekend.  We love you.

Hawaii 2009

At the airport

As vacation approached we had mixed feelings.  It seemed a bit foolish to take the week away with looming job loss, but we had already paid for the airfare and accommodations.  So, after a few days to think and pray, we decided to go.  Along with us were Paul & Chris Jakeman and Larry & Gayle Seitz.  We stayed in a 2 bedroom villa at Ko Olina (on Oahu) and had a very good time.  We took time to rest, reflect, pray, and enjoy ourselves.  Sunsets were amazing!  Having the other couples there was a true blessing.

It was a bit cooler than we expected and it was quite windy.  We took TONS of pictures, but have posted a select set (so don’t panic – click the photo shown to see the rest).

Sary-Jo with her singing buddy

We won a trip to Las Vegas that included airfare and two nights at The Venetian.  We were able to extend it for a few days and celebrate both our anniversary and New Years.  We had a great time, although one time is sufficient for New Years Eve in Vegas!  We saw several shows and spent a fair amount of time beginning the paperwork for adoption.  We were truly blessed and enjoyed it thoroughly.  Click on our picture to see many more.  When the first picture appears, hover over the edges to go forward or back through the pictures.

Sarah & Kyle – Eurotrip 2008

Sarah and Kyle went to Europe and visited several exchange students of yesteryear.  They also did a pretty good job of truly understanding why beer is such an important element of Belgian culture.  They also met up with Janel and Ryan in Paris, as Janel and Ryan were returning from Uganda.  Click on the picture to see many more.
